In addition to the many traditional forms of care available to our clients at Old Dominion Animal Hospital, we also have the pleasure of offering you the holistic and complementary care services of Dr. Nellie Bierly. Dr. Bierly treats animals with a variety of effective and innovative natural remedies including Acupuncture, Chiropractic Care, and Herbal and Nutritional Therapy. Her services are invaluable to the health and well-being of your pet after diagnosis and as a means of preventing future disease.
Holistic Veterinary Medicine takes into account all aspects of your pet's life. Not only will your pet receive a comprehensive physical examination, but Dr. Bierly will ask about all of your pet's behaviors, medical and dietary history, environmental factors, and emotional stresses. Holistic medicine takes a "wholeness" approach to your pet's health. In some situations, treatments may involve surgery or conventional veterinary remedies, along with alternative techniques to provide a complementary whole.
Acupucture
Acupuncture has been used in the Orient for over 4,000 years to prevent many types of diseases by strengthening the body's immune system. It is also used to provide pain control and encourage the body to heal itself. Very fine needles are inserted into the body along channels of energy flow and these connections to the central nervous system trigger favorable responses. Acupuncture is widely used in pets to treat musculoskeletal problems and allergies, as well as many other conditions.
Chiropractic Care
Chiropractic care deals with treatments of the spine, bones, joints and muscles in your pet. Gentle adjustments can put vertebrae back in place or relieve tension so that your pet's body is back in alignment. These adjustments can decrease pain, increase energy, and allow your pet to move around more easily.
Herbal & Nutritional Therapy
Specific herbs and plants have been used for medicinal purposes throughout history. Chinese Herbal Medicines as well as many Western herbs are used for a variety of medical problems and diseases including behavioral problems such as fear, anxiety, and anger. A combination of many herbs may be prescribed to suit your pet's specific needs. Herbs are designed to support your pet's body and provide balance during its self-healing process. Some herbs used to treat your pet may be familiar to you such as: Echinacea, Milk Thistle, Aloe, Licorice and even Dandelion.
Nutritional therapy is based on the premise that proper nutrition is the best preventative medicine your pet can receive. Specific diets designed just for your pet may keep them sound and healthy. Some pets will suffer from allergies stemming from pet foods. Dogs and cats in the wild would not be eating a diet consisting of grain and starch. Biologically Appropriate Raw Food diets, consisting of meat, bones, whole eggs, and non-starchy vegetables, have been developed to help restore your pet's health and may prevent many health problems. Old Dominion is pleased to carry some of these diets, just ask us, as they must be kept refrigerated and frozen.
