Medical Laser Therapy

We at Old Dominion Animal Hospital are committed to providing the best care possible for your pets. In keeping with this theme, our hospital has added the latest technology for joint and soft tissue pain problems, the COMPANION THERAPY LASER. This laser reduces swelling in joints and soft tissues which dramatically reduces pain caused by the pressure. The treatment works by the application of red and infrared light over an area that needs improvement or healing. Treatments last 3 to 6 minutes per site and require no anesthesia. Your pet will be very comfortable as this laser produces only slight warmth in the inflamed tissue. Laser Therapy for chronic conditions can require multiple (6-12) treatments to get your pet to a very comfortable situation. Maintenance treatments are then required every 3 to 8 weeks afterwards to maintain the reduced pain and/or mobility.

If your pet is currently on medications to reduce swelling and/or pain, we wanted you to know that this therapy may offer an alternative. This treatment may reduce or eliminate the need for oral medications or injections. Have you noticed your pet slowing down, having trouble with everyday movement? If so, Laser Therapy may provide a solution to muscle and joint soreness.

As your dog ages the probability of arthritic pain increases greatly: at ages 8-10 27% of dogs suffer from arthritis. The numbers increase to 37% for dogs 11-13 years old. It is more difficult to diagnose arthritic pain in cats as they tend to isolate themselves when they are not feeling well. You may notice your cat just slowing down. If your pet seems to be suffering just ask our doctors about Laser Therapy as a solution. To learn more about pain management in your pet visit this website, www.paininthepast.com.

Laser therapy not only provides relief from pain and swelling, but provides a superior method of healing wounds or injuries by stimulating acupuncture points and causing the release of endorphins. It also is used to resolve many persistent dermatological disorders by accelerating tissue repair and cell growth. The Therapy Laser can cause an increase in cell enzyme production and stimulates the formation of new capillaries within damaged tissue. It reduces the formation of scar tissue and improves nerve function.

The laser provides a non-invasive method of healing by stimulating your pet's body to heal itself. Our doctors at Old Dominion will be happy to discuss your pet's needs and we can see if Laser Therapy might be right for your pet. As always our goal is a higher quality of life for your pet.
